A Double Double for Rayleigh Town
For the second season running Rayleigh Town completed the remarkable double of winning Senior Division One and also the Essex Intermediate Cup. In the latter it took a replay for Town to beat Newmont Travel 1 – 0 after the first match had finished 1 – 1 after extra time.
In the league it was a close run race for the title with newly promoted Essex Police and Rayleigh Town swapping places at the top throughout the season before Rayleigh finally manged to get their nose head to take the trophy by just a single point.
Shell Club took the Second Division from Bishops Stortford Swifts by a margin of two points.
Old Chelmsfordians were convincing winners of Reserve Division One finishing 10 points ahead of Takeley while in Reserve Two South Woodham Ferrers took the title by one point from Rayleigh Athletic.
In the Senior Division Cup there was a major shock when Cossor Sports, who had been relegated into division two at the end of last season, beat Rayleigh Town 2 – 1 after extra time making up for the previous seasons disappointment when they finished runners-up.
Takeley made up for the disappointment in the league by beating Basildon Town 2 – 0 in the Reserve Division Cup Final.
This season saw the inauguration of the Essex Intermediate Inter League Competition and the Olympian League drew with the South Essex Combination and Mid Essex League and beat the Southend & District League , Southend Borough Combination and South Essex League
In a nine week period at the start of 1985 only 87 ,atches out of a scheduled 271 were played due to bad weather conditions.
